Diamniotic/Monochorionic Twins {I am Strong}

{Anneka} I am strong. I am strong because at 8 weeks into my pregnancy I began to bleed and thought I was going down the road to losing another pregnancy. After a trip to the hospital it was confirmed my baby was fine and not only fine…there were two babies. We were having diamniotic/monochorionic twins. At 12 weeks we were given the option to terminate because our babies were high risk for trisomy 13 or trisomy 18.

We continued with the pregnancy because we felt very strong that everything would be fine. At 20 weeks after 8 hours of tests in a hospital we were told our twins had Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome. The smaller of our twins (baby b) was growing disproportionately to (baby a).

We were taken to a board room in the hospital and the doctors explained what could happen to our babies and the safest option would be to sever the umbilical cord of the smaller twin to save the larger twin.

I quickly collected my things and left the hospital stunned that someone would so casually present this to me in a power point presentation. My husband and I knew we were to continue with the pregnancy and would have the babies or baby we were supposed to have. I ended up on bed rest a week later.

Our girls were due in April and we had them in February. They were beautiful. They spent 17 days in the NICU and are now happy, healthy, intelligent and perfect 6 year olds.
